Great deal for sushi lovers at Golden Bay | Dining with Denise Neil ...

Here we are, stuffing ourselves last night at Golden Bay. To the left is the family of social media maven Karen in Delano. They like it, too.

Last night, I ate until it hurt at Golden Bay Japanese Restaurant, a hole-in-the-wall sushi place at 3811 W. 13th St. that people have been telling me for months to check out. I?m glad I did, because it was delicious. I?m writing a review of the restaurant for this Friday?s Go! section.

But while visiting, I learned of a sushi deal that was so good, it?d be irresponsible of me to wait another second to share it.

When patrons at Golden Bay buy one special sushi roll ? a fancy chef?s creation such as the Rainbow roll ? they get a more basic roll for free. The special rolls tend to cost $9 0r $10 apiece, but each time a customer orders one, they can choose from one of four more basic rolls, such a California roll or a delicious sweet potato roll, and get it free.

And the basic rolls at Golden Bay aren?t that basic. They?re pretty substantial, and one of the choices ? a deep-fried roll called the ?Western? ? is pretty complicated. Last night, we ordered three special rolls but had six rolls of sushi, and all of them were great.

Many thanks to the several readers who urged me to check this place out. I?m looking forward to writing the review.

Hurricane Sandy: A Personal Survival Kit | Therapy Soup

Hurricane Sandy Over Cuba (Nasa.gov)

We?re getting ready for the approaching hurricane, Sandy.

In my informal poll of coworkers and friends, I found that many of us view storms as kind of thrilling.

Of course, if you?ve ever been caught in a hurricane or another dangerous natural event, you?d probably disagree vehemently with those who find approaching storms ?exciting in a good way??you?d say they are frightening and deadly and exciting in a bad way.

And I?d have to agree. The potential loss of life and property is not something that I can view as other than tragic.

However, the sheer power of a storm is, for me, a spiritual experience. It?s also, for me, a reminder that that we are not in control, the Creator is.

For reasons beyond our ken, hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, blizzards and other extreme nature events occur, no matter whether we want them to or not. They remind us that sometimes we just have to accept what occurs in our lives.

Should we try to overcome negative events? Sure, when possible. But sometimes, and in some cases, when facing personal hurricanes, storms of grief, painful losses, emotional swings, and so on, we have to learn to prepare ourselves, batten down the hatches, and wait out the storm.

Here?s a list of ?hurricane? preparations of the human kind:

1. Stock up your batteries and conserve energy.

You need physical and emotional energy to keep going. Energy generators which stock your ?batteries? include extra sleep, comforting and healthy foods, cutting back, when possible, on too many unnecessary or stressful activities, and taking care of your mental health in the way that works for you.

2. You?ll to light the darkness. Have some extra flashlights and a lantern ready and stock up on candles and matches.

Light is a common metaphor for inspiration and insight. Keep reading inspiring books, blogs, articles. (Avoid stuff that is dark or draining). Listen to uplifting music. Try to befriend inspiring people or at least read their biographies. Prayer and meditation are great light-bringers.

3. ?Stock up on bottled water.

In a natural crisis, water supplies can become tainted or can even be shut off. But, water is essential to life. Water purifies and hydrates, washes away the sticky stuff and deadly germs, it keeps us feeling fresh. There is more water on this planet than land. Water is the greater part of nature.

Immerse yourself in things that strengthen you, keep you feeling fresh. For me this includes walks in natural settings, running, and other outdoor activities. The great outdoors, or even a city park, heal the mind and soul.

4. Have some cash on hand.

You might need to fall back on some hard cash in emergencies. So be sure to have the currency you earned ready to use. Cash is a metaphor for healthy coping skills, behavioral skills, and all the interpersonal skills you?ve gained in therapy and in life. Spend them when you need them. Best of all, unlike money, the more you use your ?mental? cash, the more it multiplies and the more you have!

5. Lock your doors.

Sometimes, you have to lock your doors. Lock in the good friends, ?supportive and healthy relationships; but lock out the draining, negative ones.

THE PROPOSED BUDGET OF THE FEDERAL MINISTRY OF ...

Since the presentation of the 2013 Budget draft to the National Assembly by President Goodluck Jonathan, we have received a lot of positive feedback from Nigerians in different parts of the country.

In particular, the fact that the budget presentation took place in October, the earliest in recent memory, was highly commended by many Nigerians who have reached out to us.

Many other aspects of the budget also received commendation. They include:
the focus on power supply, roads, rail and aviation safety
the robust plans to reduce domestic debt, recurrent expenditure and the fiscal deficit.
gender-friendly nature of the budget and the provisions made to boost maternal and child welfare.

We welcome this dialogue on the budget because we believe that transparency is a key ingredient of an effective budget process. The budget is for the Nigerian people and they have a fundamental right to have their say on it.

It is in this spirit that we take some comments on some aspects of the budget of the Federal Ministry of Finance even when the motives of some of those making the comments may not be positive. The aspects which have attracted comments include provisions made for personnel, overheads, capital expenditure, sitting allowances, refreshments, travels and training.

In responding to these comments, it is important to keep the following facts in mind:

The total budget proposal for the Federal Ministry of Finance is N5,599,576,180. This represents 0.11% of the entire budget estimates.

The budget for the Ministry together with its agencies is N14,759,952,111. This comes to 0.30% of the total budget.

The agencies are Debt Management Office, Budget Office of the Federation, Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, Investment and Securities Tribunal and the National Insurance Commission.

The provisions made for personnel, overheads, sitting allowances and travels, training and so on are modest and justifiable. It is important to keep in mind that the ministry pays for a lot of studies and investigations done for other parts of government in various areas of economic reform, including pensions, public service reforms, housing and mortgage etc. It also hosts experts from within and outside the country in technical sessions and meetings in line with its mandate.

The proposed annual budget for cleaning and fumigating the premises of the ministry ? N43,381,673 ? is certainly within the parameters of industry standards. Additionally, it is also important to keep in mind that the ministry is facing serious structural and environment challenges which have made these services very necessary.

The ministry under the leadership of Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is very conscious of its key role and will continue to lead by example in areas under its mandate. The focus as always is on managing the finances of the country in a manner that protects and enhances the interests of the country.

Helpful Knowledge To Prevent Hair Loss | ArticlePDQ.com

Loss of hair in males and females can be related to illnesses and a variety of other types of medical conditions. Hair loss can also occur if bacteria or fungus are infecting your scalp as hair follicles have difficulty growing on an unhealthy scalp. Ringworm is one example of a common infection that can affect your scalp and there are many other common fungal and bacterial associated infections. These infections have a large number of men and women from all round the world searching for solutions to their hair loss problems. Two other common medical conditions that are well known for causing hair loss in humans are diabetes and Lupus.

In a lot of cases it is actually the cure for many diseases that causes men and women to start losing their hair and not the disease itself. One very common disease that is an example of this is cancer. Chemotherapy is the cure for cancer that causes many of the cancer patient?s using this cure to start losing their hair. Even though chemotherapy is not the most desirable cure it is the cure that has the most positive results when it comes to curing cancer. Since in most cases cancer is a disease that proves to be fatal, most males and females are willing to suffer the uncomfort of having chemotherapy plus the high possibility that they will start losing their hair afterwards, as it is the best chance they have of curing their cancer.

Medical professionals also recommend men and women ot take vitamins or supplements as they will aid in preventing hair loss. It is also recommended that a person makes sure their diet has enough iron and protein in it, as an insufficient amount increases the chances of suffering from hair loss. A lot of hair products contain a large amount of chemicals so if used wrongly they can dry out your strands of hair to the point that they start to burn. This will make them shed early which can eventually result in quite significant hair loss. Therefore using the wrong hair product for their hair type or using them to much is another common reason men and women start losing their hair, although women are usually more guilty of this than men.

A persons hair is one of the most important factors in their physical appearance, especially in females. Around the world people have a wide variety of different hair colours and styles. Some people like their natural hair colour and some prefer to dye it another colour. Some people like their hair short and some like it long etc. Though there is one thing that everybody has in common and that is, when a person starts losing their hair it affects their physical appearance. This can make some people feel less attractive about themselves. This can lower a persons self esteem which can cause them to start suffering from depression or anxiety. So finding a remedy that will regrow their hair and prevent further hair loss can become a major part of their life.

There is now a wide range of different products on the market that claim to solve hair loss in both males and females. Nowadays there are also a variety of natural hair loss products on the market that weren?t available in the past. Therefore most people now prefer to use a natural hair loss product rather than a chemical based product. There are now many well established companies that offer natural hair loss treatments. One such company that produces a natural product that has been clinically proven to regrow hair, therefore has become one of the most preferred hair loss cures on the market is called provillus. So if you suffering from hair loss make sure provillus is on your list of products to check out.

Provillus for men and women is dedicated to providing a premium hair loss treatment that is clinically proven to regrow hair.

Eating Disorders and Negative Self Talk: Fat Talk-Free Week 2012 ...

"Ugh, I feel so fat!"

"My thighs are huge."

"I can't believe I ate that entire bowl of ice cream."

If any of these sound familiar, you're not alone. Women participate in so-called "fat talk" every day, criticizing their own bodies and complimenting others. Yep, something that seems positive such as "You look great, have you lost weight?" or "You look amazing in that mini! You're so thin!" also counts as fat talk.

But this week, women are encouraged to silence that conversation and start a new one.

Started in 2008 by Tri-Delta sorority, the third week of every October is designated as Fat Talk Free Week and has become a time to reflect upon, accept, and talk about our bodies in a more positive and constructive way. Although the initiative began on college campuses, it has spread to women and men of all ages.?

Julie Holland, M.H.S., chief marketing officer of the Eating Recovery Center, shares her tips on how you can participate in Fat Talk Free Week and develop a more positive body image in yourself and your friends:

1. Try not to emphasize looks: Shift your attention from appearance to values and behaviors. "It is not about what our body looks like, but rather what it does for us," Holland says. "Take the focus away from the mirror and take note of all the great things your body helps you do and be."

2. Be aware of the messages you share about your own body. Make an effort to say at least three positive things about your body every day; after all, fostering a positive body image in others starts with doing so in ourselves.

3. Recognize that every body is different. Genetics influences our body size, shape, and weight.

4. Learn to listen to your body?s needs and appreciate what your body can do for you. "Eat when you are hungry and stop when you're satisfied," Holland says. Rest when you are tired and move your body to get adequate exercise so that you can experience life to its fullest.

5. Be a critical consumer of media. Beautiful though they may be, celebrities and models in magazines and on TV get a lot of help from Photoshop.

"Body shapes and sizes in the media are often digitally altered and impossible to achieve," Holland says. "At Eating Recovery Center, we encourage our patients to ask questions of images from the media: 'Is this image realistic?' or 'Does this image portray a healthy body image?' I encourage everyone to remember that a large percentage of photos we see are altered."

Do you find yourself using fat talk? How do you plan to participate in Fat Talk Free Week? Are you going to tell your friends to join in?

Girl, 9, among the dead as Lebanon's military pledges to restore ...

A nine-year-old girl is among seven people killed in the Lebanese city of Tripoli as violence following the killing of the country?s military intelligence chief spiralled.

The Lebanese military pledged to restore order to the country in what it described as a ?critical? period following the assassination of Brigadier General Wissam al-Hassan on Friday afternoon.

Tripoli has frequently been hit by clashes between Sunnis, who oppose the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Alawites, who are members of Mr Assad?s clan.

Meanwhile, troops this morning continued to exchange fire with gunmen in the southern suburbs of Beirut, wounding five

From Homeschool to Online School to College (Guest Post)

I am off to a college visit with my daughter. Thought this was a good time to leave you with a pretty informative guest post I've been holding onto. Enjoy.

Notes From a Homeschooled Mom has before written about what it takes to prepare homeschooled students for college, and for getting the jobs they ultimately want. Estelle Shumann builds upon this conversation with the following blog post, which talks about how the technological advances in education (especially online education) help homeschooled students with college preparedness in a way never before thought possible. Estelle writes at http://www.onlineschools.org, a website dedicated to online education.

From Homeschool to Online School to College: Technological Advances Prepare Students for the University

As technology has encroached into seemingly every facet of modern life in recent years, the nature of homeschooling has changed as well. In the past five years, online education programs have gone from a strange niche to a mainstream multi-billion dollar industry. As the technology facilitating online
learning improves, private online schools have had to compete with entire college courses offered virtually free of charge from some for the nation's top schools. For home schooled students, this wealth of resources is making college-preparedness easier to accomplish than ever before.
The number of students enrolled in online-only charter schools has risen rapidly in the past few years, from about 40,000 a decade ago to an estimated 250,000 today. Still, despite more than 2.4 million students around the country being listed as ?home schooled? each year, a stigma still exists regarding online learning and homeschool learning in general. While adequate data on the overall effectiveness of online homeschooling programs is not yet available, recent studies from the National Home Education Research Institute and Home School Legal Defense Association have been encouraging, claiming that standardized test scores taken by home-educated children are as much as 30% higher than scores by public school students.
Carnegie Mellon University is one of the pioneers in online learning, having offered free online courses for over a decade as part of their Open Learning Initiative. 2011 marked a major milestone, though when a free online Stanford course drew 160,000 students. Since then, Harvard and MIT have formed a edX, a venture that offers free classes on multiple disciplines to any curious student with an internet connection. While very few of these resources yet offer official college credit, they provide a valuable resource for home schooled high school-aged students looking to prepare for college coursework.
As increasing sophistication in technology leads to marked growth in the popularity of online schooling, credited courses from established schools are also expected to increase in availability. Today, the schools that do offer college or high school credit require a fee, but it is frequently far more reasonable than the costs of live, traditional courses. At Olympus High School, which allows students to take all courses online, high school and college credits can be received from fully certified teachers with tuition costs similar to the costs of community college or private high school. The school also maintains resources such as an online reference center, writing tools and 24-hour technical support service for all students.
The increased presence of established universities in online education will likely lead to even greater confidence in homeschooling among families. At the same time, sites like Khan Academy, which offers thousands of short, high-quality tutorials on subjects like algebra, chemistry, history, economics empower parents with the confidence to guide their home school children effectively. As the costs of traditional education continue to rise and the quality of education is regularly questioned, technological advances are making homeschooling a viable option for college-bound students who would benefit from the challenges of learning at their own pace in a nurturing environment. ?

Lake Placid Figure Skating: A History | The Adirondack Almanack

Saturday, October 20, 2012

Figure skating has always had an important home in Lake Placid. Early on, the Sno Birds popularized this summer retreat, and Melville and Godfrey Dewey help win the campaign for the 1932 Winter Olympics. The Skating Club of Lake Placid was formed, and after 1932, famous skaters trained there with legendary coach Gus Lussi.

When Lake Placid again hosted the Olympics in 1980, skating dominated, with state-of-the-art facilities that have continued to be used by stars like Dorothy Hamill and Sarah Hughes, and helped give rise to Scott Hamilton?s Stars on Ice. For more than one hundred years, the Lake Placid community has worked together to support figure skating and skaters in this quiet Adirondack village. Local winter sports writer Christie Sausa tells this history in Lake Placid Figure Skating: A History (History Press, 2012).

Christie Sausa is a twenty-two-year-old figure skater, speed skater, student, social entrepreneur and writer. Her career started with Lake Placid Skater, a blog she founded in 2007 that is considered the go-to site for skating-related news from Lake Placid. In addition, she is the skating correspondent for the Lake Placid News and the Adirondack Daily Enterprise, the winter sports correspondent for the Adirondack Almanack and the Lake Placid correspondent for the Free George. Christie has also contributed to Adirondack Sports and Fitness newspaper and Skating Magazine. She is an official for U.S. Figure Skating. Christie lives in Lake Placid, New York.

NOTE: Books noticed at Adirondack Almanack have been provided by their publishers.

Elaborate sting snares suspect in Federal Reserve bomb plot

NEW YORK, N.Y. - A Bangladeshi man who came to the United States to wage jihad was arrested in an elaborate FBI sting on Wednesday after attempting to blow up a fake car bomb outside the Federal Reserve building in Manhattan, authorities said.

Before trying to carry out the alleged terrorism plot, Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis went to a warehouse to help assemble a 1,000-pound bomb using inert material, according to a criminal complaint. He also asked an undercover agent to videotape him saying, "We will not stop until we attain victory or martyrdom," the complaint said.

Agents grabbed the 21-year-old Nafis ? armed with a cellphone he believed was rigged as a detonator ? after he made several attempts to blow up the bomb inside a vehicle parked next to the Federal Reserve, the complaint said.

Authorities emphasized that the plot never posed an actual risk. However, they claimed the case demonstrated the value of using sting operations to neutralize young extremists eager to harm Americans.

"Attempting to destroy a landmark building and kill or maim untold numbers of innocent bystanders is about as serious as the imagination can conjure," said Mary Galligan, acting head of the FBI's New York office. "The defendant faces appropriately severe consequences."

Nafis appeared in federal court in Brooklyn to face charges of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and attempting to provide material support to al-Qaida. Wearing a brown T-shirt and black jeans, he was ordered held without bail and did not enter a plea. His defence attorney had no comment outside court.

The defendant had sought assurances from an undercover agent posing as an al-Qaida contact that the terrorist group would support the operation.

"The thing that I want to do, ask you about, is that, the thing I'm doing, it's under al-Qaida?" he was recorded saying during a meeting in bugged hotel room in Queens, according to the complaint.

In a September meeting in the same hotel room, Nafis "confirmed he was ready to kill himself during the course of the attack, but indicated he wanted to return to Bangladesh to see his family one last time to set his affairs in order," the complaint said.

But there was no allegation that Nafis actually received training or direction from the terrorist group.

Prosecutors say Nafis travelled to the U.S. on a student visa in January to carry out an attack. In July, he contacted a confidential informant, telling him he wanted to form a terror cell, the criminal complaint said.

In further conversations, authorities said Nafis proposed several spots for his attack, including the New York Stock Exchange ? and that in a written letter taking responsibility for the Federal Reserve job he was about to carry out, he said he wanted to "destroy America." Other communications took place through Facebook, the complaint said.

A Twitter account with the suspect's name and photo had six followers and two messages and was linked to a Facebook page that had been taken down.

Nafis attended Southeast Missouri State University during the spring semester, which ran from January to May, university spokeswoman Ann Hayes told The Associated Press. He was pursuing a bachelor's degree in cybersecurity.

Hayes said Nafis requested a transfer of his records in July and the university complied, though she couldn't say where the records were transferred.

On Wednesday, federal officials were at the New York home where Nafis was staying, a red brick building in the Jamaica neighbourhood of Queens. Owner Rafiqul Islam said Nafis was staying with his second-floor tenants, and he was told he was related to the family. The tenants didn't answer their door and their apartment was dark.

Islam said Nafis had only lived there about a month or so.

"I didn't notice anything, he spoke to me very quietly," he said. "He said he was going to be studying here."

Neighbour Jose Santos, 19, said he would see Nafis at the same grocery store.

"He seemed like a regular nice guy to me," Santos said. "I'm just shocked right now to see that he tried to plant a 1,000-pound bomb. That's crazy."

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said the case is one more reminder that New York remains a target:

"New York continues to be very much in the mind frame of terrorism. This individual came here with the express purpose of committing a terrorist attack; he was motivated by al-Qaida. We see this threat as being with us for a long time to come."

Kelly said security is always a precaution and there are about a thousand officers in the counterterrorism division. He didn't specify if any additional measures were being taken.

The bank, located at 33 Liberty St., is one of 12 branches around the country that, along with the Board of Governors in Washington, make up the Federal Reserve System that serves as the central bank of the United States. It sets interest rates.

The Federal Reserve is one of the most fortified buildings in the city, smack in the middle of a massive security effort headed by the New York Police Department where a network of thousands of private and police cameras watch for suspicious activity.

The department uses sophisticated programs that can search for suspicious activity, like an object in one place for a long time, at the building modeled after London's "ring of steel." The analytic software also is designed to take video and catalogue it according to movements, shapes and colours, so officers can set parameters to search the system for, say, a suspicious van.

The Fed is also home to the world's largest accumulation of gold, according to the bank's website. Dozens of governments and central banks store a portion of their gold reserves in high-security vaults deep beneath the building. In recent years, it held 216 million troy ounces of gold, or more than a fifth of all global monetary gold reserves, making it a bigger bullion depository than Fort Knox.

The federal case was the latest where a terrorism plot against the city turned out to be a sting operation.

Four men were convicted in 2009 in a plot to bomb synagogues and shoot down military planes with missiles - a case that began after an FBI informant was assigned to infiltrate a mosque in Newburgh, about 70 miles north of New York City. The federal judge hearing the case said she was not proud of the government's role in nurturing the plot.

In 2004, a Pakistani immigrant was arrested and convicted for a scheme to blow up the subway station at Herald Square in Midtown. His lawyers argued that their client had been set up by a police informant who showed him pictures of Iraq abuse to get him involved in an attack against civilians.

UK police sorry for using stun gun on blind man

LONDON (Reuters) - British police apologized on Wednesday for using a stun gun on a blind man after officers mistook his white cane for a samurai sword.

Officers were responding to "a number of reports that a man was walking through Chorley armed with a samurai sword", when they confronted Colin Farmer, who was on his way to meet friends in a pub last Friday, in the northern English town.

When Farmer, 61, did not respond to their calls to stop, one of the officers used his taser stun gun, which delivers a 50,000 volt shock.

"I certainly didn't know they were police - and I certainly didn't know they were shouting at me. I thought I was going to be attacked by some hooligans," Farmer told the Lancashire Evening Post newspaper.

Despite pleading with the police and telling them he was blind, he was handcuffed.

"It then became apparent that this man was not the person we were looking for and officers attended to him straight away," said Chief Superintendent Stuart Williams in a statement, adding the innocent man was taken to hospital for treatment.

"Lancashire Constabulary deeply regrets what has happened. We have clearly put this man through a traumatic experience and we are extremely sorry for that."

Police later arrested a 27-year old man in connection with the sword reports but released him without charge.

The incident has now been referred to the independent police watchdog for further investigation.

Mexico raids seized campuses, battle protesters

MEXICO CITY (AP) ? Police raided three teachers colleges on Monday in the western state of Michoacan, where dozens of students had been hijacking buses and delivery trucks for a week to protest curriculum changes.

Masked protesters battled police with rocks and fireworks. Student involved in the campus takeovers burned a dozen trucks and buses before authorities swept in, detaining 176 strikers. Ten police officers were injured, three seriously, the Michoacan state government reported.

The massive police raids early Monday indicate patience is running out with campus takeovers, which have become common and often violent in Mexico. In recent weeks, hundreds of students at two other occupied campuses in Mexico have battled protesters to free their universities from strikers.

The standoff at the teachers colleges began over a week ago, when students seized the campuses to protest plans to require them to take English and computer science courses. The protesters say the colleges are meant to prepare teachers for rural areas where basic skills are more of a priority.

The protesting students fanned out, forcing bus and delivery truck drivers to move the vehicles to the occupied campuses. Protesters ended up holding the vehicles and several of their drivers for more than week. The governments said the hijackings caused losses of hundreds of thousands of dollars per day.

Michoacan state spokesman Elina Ambriz said one of the three campuses had been recovered without incident.

It was the latest in a round of pushbacks against campus takeovers, which have long been tolerated in Mexico because authorities are often loath to interfere. Police are wary of entering many colleges because of the concept of university autonomy, which protects academic independence by allowing colleges to run their own affairs. Memories of student massacres in 1968 and 1971 make cracking down on campus protests politically unpalatable.

But with common citizens and other students being affected by the takeovers, police and even students themselves have begun to act.

Last month, rejected students demanding admission to the University of Michoacan took over the campus. After two weeks without classes, dental and medical students donned motorcycle helmets, leaped the walls around the campus in white lab coats and battled to take their university back. Rocks and fists flew, sticks and baseball bats were swung, a fire extinguisher was turned against the medical students, and finally the squatters fled the school of medicine. Classes reopened days later.

This month, about 100 students at Mexico City's Autonomous University rushed the gates of their seized campus and briefly forced out striking students, who later returned with a pickup truck to bash in the gates and retake the school. The two sides are now in talks to end the standoff.

With only a dozen or so masked students holding some campuses at the school, frustration has boiled over among hundreds of locked-out students who tried to take make-up classes in improvised classrooms. The strikers were backed by some professors and university employees.

"We are now holding classes in tents, at the soccer field next to the campus, and the conditions are deplorable," said Gustavo Martinon, 23, a media arts student at the university's Cuautepec campus. "When it rains, the tents flood."

"The engineering students need labs and computers, and they don't have them. We (media arts) students need the radio station, the video facilities, and all the equipment we need."

Like most of the other students trying to take back the campus, Martinon said he has no position on whether the strikers have a legitimate grudge. Taking over a campus and affecting thousands of students, he said, isn't the way to air a grievance.

"This has nothing to do with a student movement," Martinon said. "The students are just caught in the middle."

The Mexico City strike was called to protest a crusading rector who wanted to clean up inefficiency and low graduation rates; only a few dozen of the university's nearly 15,000 students have actually graduated in the 11 years since the university was founded. The rector's proposals sparked opposition from professors and employees, and the protesters said they took over the campuses because of fraud in voting for the university's administrative board, and said they have the support of a majority of students.

"Assemblies held by the students at the university's five campuses decided to call a strike, because legal procedures had been violated and vote results ignored" in elections that gave the crusading rector a majority on the university council, said Javier Marmolejo, an anthropology professor and strike leader. He said the strike assemblies were often voice votes or raised hands. He didn't explain why he, a professor, is helping lead a student strike.

Outside citizens also have been affected by students blocking highways or taking over toll booths. Many students struggle to get by, working part time to finance their studies, and face a tight job market. Some fear employers may steer clear of graduates from universities with a history of stoppages, strikes and confrontations.

"When I completed my undergraduate degree and went to look for a job, the first thing they said to me was 'Where did you study?' and when I said the University of Michoacan, they said, 'Oh, gee, we don't really have any positions open right now,'" said Erika Garduno, a 31-year-old graduate science student. "They tag you as a problematic person, a striker."

Only about 20 percent of Mexican youths are expected to get some college education, but college graduates make up 35 percent or more of the unemployed. Unemployment for college-educated people in Mexico is higher than for high-school dropouts, in part, employers say, because universities graduate too many accountants, lawyers and doctors, instead of the careers the marketplace needs.

The medical students, not normally a radical bunch, led the take-back of the Michoacan campus late last month, in part because their school was at risk of losing its accreditation.

"I think the kids in medical school were tired of putting all their effort into this and because of the acts of a few people, the medical school loses its accreditation," said Victor Hugo Garduno, a professor of metallurgy, who has helped lead a new movement known as "No Mas Tomas" or "No More Takeovers."

What You Need to Know About Stress Management | Healthy ...

Webmaster | October 15, 2012 (7 hours ago) | no comments

What You Need to Know About Stress ManagementRealizing the need of stress management, many experts have been continuously conducting studies in order to give people who suffer from it as many options as possible.

As defined, stress management is means of managing stress using various techniques that are key in equipping people with coping mechanisms that can be effective when they undergo different types and levels of stress.

Experts say that over the years, there have been so many stress management techniques that have been developed in order to help people deal with psychological stress, physical stress, and even emotional stress.

But, these stress management techniques is not tailored for all types of people. Many of these will work on other people while some of it may not be very effective or helpful to other.

So, for stress management to be effective, an individual must utilize a specific technique or strategy and see if they can cope with various stressful circumstances.

Managing stress effectively

Stress is one thing that many people cannot live without. In fact, there are those people who use stress to fuel their drive to do something or accomplish tasks in time. Although stress can be beneficial to some people, this is not always the case for everyone because too much unmanaged stress can be detrimental to physical and psychological well being.

As defined, stress refers to an individual?s ?physiological response to an internal or external stimulus that triggers the fight-or-flight response.? This means that it is something that is innate for people and normal once it is managed properly.

To date, there are various models of stress management that are being recommended to people who want to effectively manage their stress levels. The most common stress management models include the transactional model and the health realization or innate health model.

The transactional model says that stress that is not a direct response to a certain stressor but from other sources can be controllable. Here, the stress that a person goes through may be reduced by changing the stressors? perceptions, thus, providing people with different strategies and techniques for them to cope up and gain back their confidence in completing tasks at hand.

Another stress management model is the health realization or innate health model which says that being stressed doesn?t always need a stressor to be felt.

This model aims to help individuals that are being stressed to better understand the nature of a person?s thinking specifically in giving them the realization that to know when they are feeling stress so they will know how to overcome it and eventually reduce their stress levels.

To effectively manage stress, there are some techniques that can be used to manage it. The majority of stress management techniques can help people who get stress to cope with it or even control it during crucial instances. Experts say that most of these techniques can vary depending on the theories that are being taken into consideration.

The techniques to manage stress include meditation, cognitive therapy for anxiety or clinical depression, nootropic, autogenic training, exercise, deep breathing, conflict resolution, various relaxation techniques, which include either fractional and progressive relaxation or using stress balls.

You can also use natural medication, alternative treatments that are validated by the clinic, effective time management, and through listening to certain types of music that are relaxing which include new age music and classical music.
